A loan helped a member to buy more animals.

Mujeres Fuente De Vida Group's story

It has been traditional in the Highlands of Guatemala for girls to stay home, help with household work and learn to weave. In addition, there often has not been funds to take care of educational expenses. This is what thirty four year old Nivia experienced, and she could only attend school for six years. Instead, she worked as a domestic in the capital city of the country. She married a man who works in a store and the couple have three children who range in age from one to seven.

Twelve years ago, she began to raise chickens, turkeys and pigs. She sells them from her home and in the local market. Her goals are to increase the number of animals, increase her income and help support household expenses including the education of her children. Her oldest son attends elementary school.

Nine women who are Maya K’iche and Maya Kaqchikel have voted for Nivia to be the treasurer of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres “Fuente de Vida” or “Fountain of Life”. They live in a rural area in the department/state of Totonicapan. All raise animals like Nivia. They look forward to their monthly meeting when they make loan payments and participate in an educational training (business, health, family, women), part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and healthcare.

Every two months, they feel fortunate to receive a visit from a traveling nurse who offers all kinds of consults, exams and family planning.
