A loan helped a member to buy tires, spare parts and supplies to take care of maintenance.

Bartolense Group's story

Thirty year old Juana and her husband own a small bus and he is the driver! He drives it between towns in the western highlands of Guatemala because this is the way most of the population travels. The couple have owned the bus for three years! Juana is also a contract teacher and teaches classes in her community in the department of Quiche. The couple have three children who range in age from three to nine and all are in school. Her goal is to create enough income to improve their family home. She hopes to buy tires, spare parts, and supplies to take care of the maintenance of the bus with her first Kiva loan.

Juana has joined six other Maya K’iche women and formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Bartolense”. These ladies raise chickens, goats, pigs and also sell corn. They appreciate a monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, monthly education training (business, health, family, women) and bi-monthly health care services (consults, exams, family planning). These “plus” services of education and health care are essential to their success as women, mothers, and entrepreneurs as they have limited or no formal education and it is challenging to access healthcare in Guatemala.
