A loan helped to increase the volume of coffee beans we purchase from female farmers in PR.

Isabella's story

My love affair with coffee began at an early age, thanks to my Puerto Rican father. He was a true coffee connoisseur, and I remember the rich aroma of freshly brewed coffee filling our home each morning. Those moments by the coffee pot were some of the fondest memories of my childhood, and they sparked a lifelong passion for coffee.

As I grew older, my fascination with coffee deepened. I learned about the intricate processes of coffee roasting and brewing which led me to work for several years at two of the biggest coffee roasters in Wisconsin.

Eventually I began dreaming about starting my own coffee roasting company, and in 2022 I joined BizStarts where I began developing my business plan. In 2023, with the support of the BizStarts community I founded Isla Bella Coffee Roasters, where our mission goes beyond just brewing great coffee – it's about empowering women coffee growers on the island of Puerto Rico and building a stronger, more equitable coffee community.

I'm extremely proud to be part of a movement that empowers women coffee growers on the island. My vision is simple yet profound – to create a fairer, more just coffee industry where women are given equal opportunities. Through fair trade pricing, we ensure that these remarkable women receive fair compensation for their hard work and dedication. Additionally, we actively connect them with valuable government resources and financing, enabling them to flourish and achieve long-term sustainability.

My journey from a coffee-loving child to a coffee entrepreneur with a social mission has been incredible. Coffee has not only been a source of comfort and connection in my life but has also become a means to uplift and empower others. Through Isla Bella Coffee Roasters, I hope to continue sharing the love and culture of coffee while making a positive impact on the lives of women coffee growers in Puerto Rico.
