A loan helped to purchase raw food materials to cook and sell.

Sarah Toluaina's story

Sarah Toluaina is 45 years old and she is a widow. She lives in an urban settlement in Lae town of Morobe Province. She is formally employed with a merchandise company in Lae town. Though she earns a living from her employment, Sarah Toluaina has started an informal table market by selling cooked food at her residence with assistance from her family. She started her business after learning that the employed people come home hungry and often late from work at around 8:00 p.m. or 9:00 p.m. Sarah Toluaina not only sells from home but she also makes lunch packs for workmates to sell at her office. She makes a good weekly earning of 200 PGK selling a lunch pack at 10 PGK. She has applied for a loan to purchase more raw food materials like bananas and greens. She will also buy some protein rich food materials to add to the lunch packs. From her expected savings she plans to save and buy a taxi for herself to transport her lunch packs to other offices in the same area where she works.
