A loan helped to expand my Bloomington-only Soul Food restaurant to a dine-in restaurant!

Sharolyn's story

Despite a modest beginning and a tumultuous middle, punctuated by moments of forgiveness, I have always been drawn to cooking. Food has been both my friend and foe, a source of comfort during trying times and a celebration of joy during moments of triumph. It has been my constant companion, offering solace when nothing else could.

I started cooking at a young age, as my mother would often leave my brother and me alone, providing basic ingredients like eggs and ramen. It was through experimentation with these simple foods that I discovered my love for cooking. I expanded my culinary repertoire, creating more complex dishes and honing my skills by watching food shows on cable networks. My passion for cooking soon became all-consuming, and I found myself striving to please others with my culinary creations.

However, my dedication to cooking had its consequences. I became overweight and was in an abusive relationship where I was expected to cook three times a day for my partner. In 2021, my husband stabbed me and my daughter, leaving me with a neck injury that nearly took my life. This tragedy became a turning point for me. I lost the weight and my appetite, paving the way for a new beginning.

Today, in 2023, I have established a flourishing restaurant called Sao's. My cuisine is a fusion of soul food, and the ambiance of my establishment is everything to me. I have finally found my purpose, something that had eluded me for so long. I use food to create an experience that goes beyond mere sustenance, and it brings me immense joy to cater to others.
