A loan helped a member to buy potatoes, flour and more for her delicious prepared foods and beverages.

Mujeres Prosperas Group's story

Every single day, from morning until night, 34-year-old Nidia, a married mother of three children who range in age from 11 months to 19 years, sells her prepared meals and beverages.

She has been doing this for seven years in her rural community in the department/state of Suchitepequez.

Previously, she cooked potatoes over a wood fire, but one year ago she opted to buy a food cart and began cooking popular fried potatoes and chicken.

Fortunately, her sister and oldest son help her. With her first Kiva loan, she can buy more potatoes to cook and flour for her flavorful “atole” drink.

Nidia is careful to buy all products at the wholesale level to save herself a little money.

Although she only has a sixth grade education, Nidia was elected by six women to be the president of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank Mujeres Prosperas.

Some of these ladies have the same businesses as Nidia, while others sell chicken by the pound, used American clothing, new casual clothing and shellfish. Others are farmers and convenience store owners.

They meet monthly, make loan payments and then participate in an interactive educational training, part of the Microcredit Plus program of loans, monthly educational training (business, health, family, women) and bi-monthly health care services (consults, exams, family planning)

Nidia and her friends are unable to access credit in a bank. Thank you, Kiva lenders, for lending a helping hand to them!
