A loan helped a member to buy chickens for her animal business and fabrics and thread for her textiles.

Unidas Clarenas Group's story

Clara, 48, has a ninth grade education and was unable to finish her secondary studies because she married and became a homemaker. Her husband works as a pilot and together they raise their three children, ages 19 to 27 (all professionals). She is en entrepreneur who has been working for 19 years raising barnyard animals (chickens) and embroidering traditional blouses. She sells from home and also at the local market. Clara is applying for her fifth Kiva loan to buy animals, fabric and thread. She is sure that with this new investment she will be able to fill orders for the New Year's Eve parties.

Eight of the women are of K'iche ethnicity and form the Unidas Clarenas Group in the Department (state) of Sololá. These women participate in monthly meetings where they make payment on their loans under the "Microcrédito Plus" program which offers small loans, education and health services. Every month, a facilitator uses diagrams, photos and games to involve the women in educational sessions which they can use in their daily lives and businesses. A business management session helps them in their animal raising and textile businesses. Every two months they receive the visit of a traveling nurse who provides physical examinations, early detection testing and access to family planning.
