Twenty-eight-year-old Petronila, a mother of five children who range in age from one to ten, is married to a bricklayer. She has two years of formal education but is most proud that two of her children are in the first and second grades. Five years ago, she began selling fruit as a vendor in nearby markets. She also raises chickens and pigs and weaves belts, shawls and utility clothes. A second Kiva loan will enable her to buy more popular fruit to resell. Her goal is to increase inventory, realize more income and have plenty of fruit available for year-end parties.
Six Maya K’iche women have elected Petronila to be the President of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Trabajadoras Sacpulup” in the department/state of Solola. All of the ladies have the same businesses as Petronila. They reap tremendous benefits from participating in the Microcredit Plus program of loans, monthly educational training and bi-monthly health care services. A recent topic in the training was about empowerment and business administration. The women also learn about health, hygiene, nutrition and other relevant topics. Health care is delivered by a traveling nurse who speaks their Maya K’iche language, makes them feel comfortable and offers all kinds of exams, consultations and family planning.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for learning about Petronila and her friends! Your loan support will be greatly appreciated!
