La Union Group's story

Agriculture can be very challenging in any part of the world, especially because of climate change. Guatemala grows and exports the largest amount of cardamom in the world. This spice has been used for centuries both as a medicine and for cooking.

Veronica is a 32-year-old married woman and a mother to six children who are between four and seventeen years old. Five of her children go to primary school and high school, and her husband works as a security guard for a company.

Veronica has worked growing Cardamom for the last fourteen years and has fifteen people working for her all year round. She comes from a poor family and went to school until the sixth grade. Her goal is have more crops, more income and stable household finances. Veronica is requesting her first Kiva loan to buy more seeds.

These nine women are Mayan and have the privilege of being trilingual, they speak Poqomchi, Q'eqchi, and a little Spanish. They are part of the loan, education, and medical assistance program “Microcrédito Plus”. Their community bank Friendship Bridge is called "La Unión" in the Quiché department/state.

These women receive great benefits from their monthly educational training, which covers one aspects of four topics: business, health, family, and women. Every two months they get access to basic medical assistance services, which include consultations, medical examinations, and family planning.
