La Bendición 6 Group's story

Maruca is 49 years old and she has 8 children. She is illiterate because there was no school near the farm where she lived.

Since she was 8 she lived with her grandmother, because her parents had separated. She remembers that she began working since she was little. She worked in the kitchen. When she was 12, she began working on a farm, adding fertilizer by hand, weeding and cutting coffee.

Married at 16, she and her husband were able to support their children's studies until the 9th grade.

A friend told her about the credit opportunities that de Chajulense Association of Women United for Life offered for women and she got interested.

She invested her first credit in the purchase, fattening and sale of chickens and pigs. From the second to the fourth loans, she has invested in the purchase of land with coffee plantations and their maintenance. This year she will invest in the maintenance of the coffee plantation.

Maruca is the leader of group La Bendición 6. The group is formed by 4 women. One is from de Ixil Maya ethnicity and 3 are from the Ladino ethnicity.

The group will invest their loans in agriculture 75% and retail 25%. On average, each member of the group has 3 children. The average age of the members of the group is 37 years old. 100% are illiterate.
