A loan helped to jump-start her weaving operations by enabling her to invest in raw materials and increase her earning potential.

Mual's story

Mual has seen a complete transformation of her community during her lifetime. Born in 1958, she lived through communist upheaval, guerrilla warfare, and forced relocation. Through these changing times, she raised two children and struggled to keep her family supported in their rural village. Her husband, Khai, is a farmer and a village leader, but their family faced privation and uncertainty through much of her adulthood.

Several years ago, Mual's adult daughter began training as a weaver in the hammock project, and soon enlisted her mother to support her. Working side by side with her daughter, Mual realized that she had also become an excellent weaver. Mual has become an expert in two particular hammocks designs, the Montauk and Catalina hammocks! She’s even enlisted her husband to support by making the eyes of the hammock. “It gives him something to do,” she laughed.

Mual uses the income from hammock weaving to support her daily needs. She cares for her granddaughter who has some special needs and so having a flexible source of income is perfect for her! It has been so perfect in fact, that it is now her only source of income and provides for a middle-class income in her region! She’s thrilled at the opportunity and is looking ahead to growing her hammock making business!
