A loan helped a member to buy more chickens and turkeys.

Las Guadalupanas Ii Group's story

Thirty-three-year-old Sara is a poultry farmer. She is the mother of three children who range in age from five to fifteen. Her husband works at a beverage company. Their combined income supports the education of their older children, who are in the fourth and seventh grades. For three years, Sara has raised chickens, turkeys, and ducks. She sells them at the large market in the town of Quiche each month. She also arranges thread so it can be woven into beautiful designs for regional textiles. A third Kiva loan will help her buy more chickens and turkeys. Her goal is to have a large barnyard filled with all kinds of poultry!

Sara was voted to be the Secretary of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Las Guadalupanas II” by six other Maya K’iche women who live in a small community in the department/state of Quiché. Some have the same businesses as Sara, while others are seamstresses or manage tortilla shops called “tortillerias.” Since they cannot get a loan at a bank, or they have little or no formal education, and also because healthcare services are challenging to obtain or non-existent, they benefit greatly from the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, monthly educational training (business, health, family, and women), and bi-monthly healthcare services (consults, exams, family planning).

Kiva lenders, who fund their much-needed loans, are held in very high esteem. Thank you to each of you!
