LaVerne (myself) and Muhamad are community-based agricultural enthusiasts that focus on the cultivation of high-quality specialty crops for local and global markets. I, LaVerne am a nutritionist by education and Muhamad is an acupuncture physician licensed in the state of Florida. I, LaVerne specialize in helping small farmers access mostly federal funding to grow their farms. They each have over 40 years’ experience in growing food and community activism.
Muhamad was born in Jamaica, in the countryside of the parish of Hanover. Muhamad was cared for by his grandmother, Miss Annie, who mostly used fresh foods, harvested just prior to eating. Canned, frozen, or otherwise pre-packaged foods were mostly unfamiliar.
When Muhamad immigrated from Jamaica to the UK, from there to Canada, and then to the US, he observed the consumption of a high degree of starch and processed sugar, canned and frozen vegetables and meats that were highly salted.
We note that years of consumption of nutrient-deficient processed foods leads to an increase of degenerative diseases.
I, LaVerne was born in Washington, DC with Senegalese and Sea Island heritage. Senegal and the Sea Islands have lots of coconut, sugarcane, bananas and other familiar tropical foods.
We both eventually moved to Florida, from different directions, and began to have greater involvement in the cultivation of food, thanks to the influence of our grandparents! As the years in urban farming progressed, we became acquainted with other urban farmers who were cultivating microgreens and other specialty crops.
We have determined that building out tractor trailer containers into cultivation spaces is a great solution. We have added to our skillset the conversion of tractor trailer containers into microgreen, baby greens and edible flower growing rooms.
Our experience has shown that we have winning products, great management and nowhere to go but forward.

OUR BUSINESS, K’IRISI GROUP, LLC is a local urban farming Project that specializes in cultivating sprouts, microgreens, baby greens, culinary mushrooms, and edible flowers. Based on our expertise in cultivating our target products, we work in collaboration with other urban farmers in Broward County to provide technical assistance. We provide hands-on presence on the farms, working with and assisting with the construction and development of growing sites. Our business began as a hobby of providing small scale, high quality micros for ourselves, family and community.
As we began exploring the microgreens, baby greens, sprouts, edible flowers and culinary mushroom markets, we began sourcing most of our microgreens seeds and mushroom spores locally as much as possible, tapping into the close-knit community of local microgreens cultivators.
Through successfully receiving and repaying a past KIVA loan of $8000 to establish the permaculture garden, we have been able to expand our business from simply a concept to an active participant in the culinary market in Broward County
What is the purpose of this loan?
This next Kiva loan will expand the progress and successes accomplished with the first Kiva loan. It will be used to purchase additional equipment, seeds, provide training through FIU, Broward College and other local institutions of higher education, and to increase our online presence. As previously noted, the response to our first effort has been good, and through collaboration with small farms, institutions of higher education, not-for-profit organizations and municipalities, we have been able to increase our effectiveness, making this an excellent time to increase our online presence.
With a great chance for success, the funds provided by this loan will have an important, positive medium-term impact on our business as we capture an ever-expanding market. As we position ourselves for a scalable, duplicable, model in a global market, the acquisition of additional tools and resources that will help our business be more efficient is a plus for the business owners and our customers.

What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
When lending internationally, the local currency in a borrower's country may lose some of its value compared to the US dollar -- requiring the partner to use more of its local currency to repay Kiva in USD. We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
