Mary's story

Mary is 26 years old and lives in the town of Njeru in the Njeru region of Uganda. She is married and has four children who are all currently in school. For the past five years, Mary has been working hard to manage her retail shop, which sells general merchandise items like sugar, salt, etc.

To help expand her business, Mary has requested a loan of 1,000,000 Ugandan shillings from BRAC Uganda. The loan will be used to purchase more bags of sugar, rice, flour and beans, and will help Mary to generate greater profits, improve her family's welfare and expand her business. Mary hopes that in the future she will be able to to start a wholesale business.

Mary is a member of BRAC's Microfinance program (MF). The program primarily serves small group members like Mary who do not have collateral for commercial loans, but have businesses that have grown and qualify for microloans.
