A loan helped an entrepreneur elevate her solo salon practice into a clean beauty space for black women.

Shelly's story

Growing up in the countryside of Jamaica, at only 4 years old, I knew I wanted to be a hairstylist. I’d spend my days in the fields, braiding grass, I grew to do the hair of all the local girls. In our culture, hairdressing was not a prestigious career, and thus, I went to college for accounting.
Upon moving to the United States, I realized the American dream meant I could be anything. I began to work for someone in their salon with no clientele. I would go everyday to the train station across from the salon and advertise; placing fliers on boards, cars, and more.

I had my first client and did her hair for free in exchange for referring me to three clients. I took that same strategy and grew my clientele to 250 paying clients, with an 85% retention rate for monthly returns. Now we are at 700 clients, to date.

With a thriving salon that also serves an educational space for new stylists looking for a head start, I have acquired a new and larger space. I am sinking my savings into developing a professional spa atmosphere for women- with the final stage of development being the electrical installation. This loan will support me in paying for this final stage and opening my new salon and spa for Fall 2023.

This loan is special because:

It supports a small business owner with 0%-interest, zero-fee capital.
