A loan helped a budding chocolatier in Chicago cover expenses and hire employees leading into the busy season.

Kathy's story

I grew up with a magnetic attraction to chocolate and confections. This was inherited from my mother and grandmother who immigrated from Germany, where I believe it is immoral if not illegal to not eat chocolate. Our holidays always included dark chocolate treats, and our house was not complete without homemade goodies.

I started helping my mother in the kitchen when I was little and turned out my first batch of chocolate chip cookies when I was 8. There was something about making food for other people that I loved, and the joy it brings others has been with me ever since. While working in retail I had been day dreaming of making a business out of desserts. Then I found the French Pastry School in Chicago and decided to enroll in their Patisserie program. This program helped me focus and finally realize that chocolate really is the way.

I have worked in small business retail for 20 years, and I come from the original Reduce, Recycle, Re-user generation. As important as it is for me to do what I love, I know the importance of being responsible to the environment, to my employees, and to customers. I am always seeking out programs that will recycle the difficult items like gloves, plastic wrap, and used parchment paper. As my business grows and I have responsibilities to employees I have designs on making sure they have the best life/work balance they can. And to my customers I want to provide products they are curious to try, but that give them the peace to know are produced with fair practices in the supply chain and without harmful ingredients.

The joy of creating for other people and seeing the smiles on their faces is still there!
