A loan helped a member to open an additional business selling catalog products.

Flores Del Milagro Group's story

Twenty-five year old Glenda was unable to attend school past the sixth grade because her parents did not have sufficient funds. She married a bricklayer and the couple have two children who are three and five years of age. Every afternoon for four years at four o’clock, she offers delicious regional appetizers from her stand on the street. She would like to use funds from a Kiva loan to open an additional business selling catalog products. Her goal is to enlarge both businesses.

Six women have elected Glenda to be the Secretary of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Flores del Milagro”. They live in a coastal area in the department/state of Quetzaltenango in Guatemala. Several have the same businesses as Glenda while others have stores, food carts (potatoes, fried chicken), or sell tamales, quesadillas or chicken meat. They benefit greatly from participating in the Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program of monthly educational training (health, family, women, business) and bi-monthly health care services. They also feel fortunate to have access to bi-monthly health care services that include exams, family planning and more. Called “Health for Life”, the program is designed to counter the healthcare challenges that rural, indigenous like Glenda and her friends face in Guatemala.

Thank you, Kiva lenders, for lending a helping hand to Glenda and the women of the “Flores del Milagro” Trust Bank.
