Sixty-six year old Alba, a divorced mother (twenty-five years) of four children with one lost at birth. Her three remaining children are over the age of thirty and finished high school. One is at the university. Alba recalls that she only had a sixth grade education because her father thought that boys should attend school through the sixth grade and girls didn’t need to be educated. So it was with great effort and sacrifice that she finished elementary school.
Alba was a seamstress for more than twenty-five years and sewed complete outfits She added perfume sales. Because she had to care for her parents, she closed her sewing business and opened a new one reselling clothing and shoes. Her children want her to stop working. She shares, “One becomes used to having a little money”.
She is requesting her fifth Kiva loan to buy clothing, bags and shoes. She would like Kiva lenders to know that Friendship Bridge has been really important in her life and her business. She sells inventory that is good, pretty and economical!
Alba has joined six other ladies who live in the department/state of Retalhuleu to form the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Barrio Concepcion”. She was elected President. Some of the women sell American clothing, tortillas, prepared meals and bread while others have the same businesses as Alba. One lady has a convenience store.
Part of the “Microcredit Plus” includes monthly educational training (business, health, family women)..
Thank you, Kiva lenders!
