Santa Gertrudis Group's story

The women from the rural area of the department/state of Quiché have found work in the agricultural sector. This is an opportunity to generate income without having to neglect their homes.

Rosa is a 23-year-old, married woman. Her business raising animals (chicks and hens) is going well. She lives with a farmer and is the mother of a four-year-old girl.

Although Rosa recently started her business she is seeing her sales increase. Once a month she sells at the closest markets. Thanks to her income she is able to help her husband with the household expenses.

At this time Rosa needs to increase her quantity of animals. With her first Kiva loan she will be able to buy more hens and chicks.

Thirteen women of Maya Poqomchi ethnicity make up the Santa Gertrudis communal bank of Puente de Amistad. They have small businesses such as raising animals. Like Rosa, the other women have little education. The monthly trainings are very important to them. With this knowledge they are learning to efficiently run their businesses and care for themselves and their families.

Every month the women have access to basic health services. Puente de Amistad calls this combination of loan, educational training and health services "Microcrédito Plus." The Kiva lenders boost the development of these women and of their entire families.
