A loan helped a plant-based deli slice business with the equipment, marketing, and ingredients to get started.

Andrew's story

I grew up in the dairy state of Wisconsin, drank milk like it was water, and ate meat 2-3 meals a day. I left Wisconsin when I went to college and studied chemistry, which sparked my passion for problem-solving and chemical reactions like those involved in cooking. At some point after college, I learned that eating more plant-based foods decreases our carbon footprint and helps our health, so that’s what I decided to do.

Two years ago, my wife and I were buying a lot of plant-based deli slices from the grocery store, and we realized it was both expensive and leading to a lot of plastic waste, so we started making our own. I used the slices to make tasty sandwiches that sustained me in my work as a middle school science teacher. I loved sharing the slices with friends and using my science and engineering skills to make them in larger quantities. Meanwhile, my students shared their concerns about animal welfare and climate change, and I recognized they needed more food options that aligned with their values. I started Mighty Deli Slices to offer people delicious and nutritious food that brings people joy in being part of a food movement that works toward a more sustainable world.
