Thirty-four year old Ana is a mother of four children who range in age from six to seventeen.
She works with her husband in their traditional weaving business. Two older children, along with her husband, weave traditional wrap-around skirts / ”cortes” while she embroiders colourful traditional blouses / ”huipiles”.
Ana has five employees who help her with the “huipiles” and can deliver five each month. She can also deliver five “cortes” on a weekly basis.
Everyone works hard and Ana’s goals are to buy more floor looms, produce more “huipiles”, employ more people and to increase income for everyone. She requests a third Kiva loan to buy another loom and a quantity of thread.
Ana was voted to be the President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Flor de Musulew” by six Maya K’iche women who live in a rural area in the department/state of Totonicapan. They all have traditional textile businesses. Many are like Ana who only has a second grade education.
All greatly benefit from a monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care. They learn about healthy habits, good nutrition and hygiene, women’s issues and family matters. They also learn about basic management tools. Every two months, a visiting nurse offers all kinds of consults, exams and family planning.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for lending these women a helping hand! They are most appreciative!
