A loan helped a Newark based food justice organization provide permaculture education and access to organic food.

Akirah's story

I was born and raised in Newark, NJ, an urban food desert that struggles with access to fresh and healthy food options. I grew up eating the Standard American Diet high in processed foods and sugars because that was what was readily available to me. To the outside world this may seem odd but this was my reality and is still many folks' realities who live in Newark today. I did my Peace Corps service in Eswatini, Africa, where I met my husband, Mancoba, who grew up learning permaculture growing practices and taught them to his community. We decided to start Ubuntu Permaculture Mission Inc,. to support residents of my hometown of Newark and other urban and rural communities across NJ with learning sustainable ways of living that steward the earth. We focus our work on building relationships amongst community members and teaching our students how to grow their own food. What motivates us and our passion for our business is seeing the impact that having access to fresh and organic produce and the knowledge to grow one's own food can have on the trajectory of a person's life. Access to healthy food and agricultural education Food is a social determinant of health that we can and will directly impact with the work that we do. On a deeper level we'd also like to heal the trauma BIPOC individuals hold as it pertains to their relationship with the land and growing their own food due to their legacy of enslavement in America. We want the youth of the future to grow up healthy and strong and we are committed to seeing that vision through.
