Kurt's story

I was born and raised in Tacoma, and have lived here most of my life. My family roots in the region are deep. I am a member of the Cowlitz Indian Tribe. I love the Pacific Northwest, and the vibrant, diverse community here. It is my desire to forge a place in our community and contribute to its growth.

As early as I can remember, I wanted to be an inventor. I strayed a little bit from that course as I grew older, but never far. I studied electronics and computer science in college. Throughout my career, I have applied my skill set to develop creative solutions to tasks, often using technology to streamline operations.

In around 2005 I began developing a Linux based automation platform. I gave several public presentations of my platform, using it to brew beer. During my demonstrations, several audience members asked, "You brew beer, but do you brew root beer?" I grew tired of answering "No," so I began researching root beer.

Nearly every root beer recipe I encountered on the internet had three ingredients: water, sugar, and root beer extract. I didn't want to make the same root beer everyone else was brewing, so I dug deeper. I sought out every book about root beer I could find. In the public library I found a book containing a root beer recipe from the 1890s. I used this as my jumping off point. As a homebrewer, I developed the ability to craft a recipe, changing one variable at a time until I achieve the desired result. After about a dozen test batches in my kitchen, I finally settled on a root beer recipe I felt proud of. Thus, my foray into soft drinks began. More recipes soon followed.
