A loan helped provide 4,000 Cameroonians with affordable access to clean energy.

Mpower Ventures's story

In rural Cameroon, only 21% of the population has access to electricity. Poverty rates in rural areas exceed 50% and many rely on polluting and costly energy sources (gas oil, paraffin oil, and candles).

MPower Ventures is a social enterprise platform that facilitates access to solar power throughout Africa with hardware, software, and financing solutions. It provides households and small businesses with solar products such as lanterns, chargers, generators, fans, and floodlights in Cameroon, Zambia, Togo, Ghana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, and Botswana. MPower does this by working with distributors, NGOs, Corporations and financing partners to provide products and financing to end users, along with tailored technical expertise and business support.

MPower has enabled clean energy access for over 42,000 beneficiaries, avoiding more than 800,000 tons of CO2 emissions.

Kiva’s loan will support MPower to reach an additional 800 households (~4,000 people) with affordable solar products (basic lighting, USB chargers, floodlights, TVs). This is MPower’s first loan through the Kiva Social Enterprise program.

This loan is special because:

It enables affordable access to solar electricity for households in Cameroon.
