A loan helped to purchase more rice, red oil, beans, sugar, vita, and other items to sell.

Catherine's story

This is 56 year-old Catherine, from Liberia. She is single and a mother of 2 kids who are attending school and live at home. She attended school up to high school. She runs a retail business selling rice, red oil, beans, sugar, vita, and other items. For the past 10 years, she has been operating her business and describes herself as a strong business woman. She learned how to sell from her sister and started the business with her own savings. She transports supplies to her business site by car. She sells for 10 hours Monday through Saturday. To continue her sales, she applied for a loan through BRAC Liberia, a Kiva lending partner. The loan will be used to purchase more rice, red oil, beans, sugar, vita, and other items to sell in order to generate greater profits. She likes her business because it gives her money each day she sells. In the future, she would like to continue sending her children to school. She wishes to say thanks.

This loan is special because:

It serves low-income individuals in rural Liberia where few alternative funding sources exist.
