A loan helped a member to buy fabric and decor.

Xejuyu Group's story

Twenty-nine-year-old Sandra dreamed of being a teacher but her parents were day laborers and could not afford to send her for more than one year to her high school. She is now married to a man who works in a screen printing business and the couple have two children who are five and seven years of age. They are both enrolled in school. For seven years, Sandra has been sewing new style, lightweight blouses called “blusas de blonda”. Her goal is to enlarge the business. She requests her fourth Kiva loan to buy more fabric and decor.

Sandra and eight other Tz'utujil women, who live on the shores of the magnificent Lake Atitlan, have joined together and formed the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Xejuyu”. They all have traditional textile businesses. They benefit greatly from participating in the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, health and education. Their monthly educational training covers topics ranging from business to health, women and family. On a bi-monthly basis, they have access to basic health care services, consults, exams and family planning. This is crucial to their success as the health care system in Guatemala is stretched thin and often non-existent. A visiting nurse who speaks their language makes them feel comfortable and confident.

Sandra and her friends are so very appreciative of the support of Kiva lenders. Thank you to each of you for your kindness!
