A loan helped an Asian American-owned boba cafe open their first brick-and-mortar in Chicago.

Daniel's story

Chris and I are childhood friends, dance teammates, and community pharmacists. We grew up in different areas of Chicago, but we both had the experience of being one of the only Asian kids in our schools. We often felt like we didn't fit in and always looked for ways to connect with our culture. Hanging out at boba (also known as bubble tea) shops was a way for us to feel more confident in our Asian American identity—and it still is.

We both achieved the stereotypical immigrant dream of becoming doctors, but we wanted to create a space that bridged the gap between cultures and brought a sense of community to Asian Americans. So, we started our own boba company, Amber Agave, and have been popularly serving at pop-ups and catering events throughout Chicagoland. We want to expand our passion for boba into our very first brick-and-mortar location so that it can become a similar destination for people of all backgrounds.

We believe that boba is more than just a drink. It's a cultural phenomenon that has brought people together from all walks of life. Our cafe is a place where people can come together to enjoy a delicious drink and forge meaningful connections with diverse cultures, all while nurturing a strong sense of belonging.
