Elsa, a twenty-seven year old married mother of three children who range in age from five to ten, is proud that each of the children attends school. For five years, she has prepared and sold tamales, regional appetizers and also makes delicious small pastries and cakes. Elsa sells all her inventory as a street vendor. Her goal is to open up her own storefront. She requests her third Kiva loan to buy ingredients, meat and beverages.
Seven determined women have elected Elsa to be the President of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Quetzali” in the department/state of Solola. These ladies have small restaurants, convenience stores, sell beverages, fruit and prepared foods. Others are seamstresses. Elsa calls the monthly meetings to order and the women make loan payments. Then, they participate in an educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, education and health care. Topics for the training are relevant to their lives and include information about health, hygiene, nutrition, women’s issues and family matters. Effective business management practices are shared with them as well. Every other month, the ladies have access to basic health care services including consults, exams and family planning.
Thank you, Kiva lenders, for your kindness and generosity!
