I started Annie's T Cakes to create a more environmentally aligned food system through vegan-izing foods that I grew up loving and enjoying with my loved ones.
Growing up, I lived in several rural areas, including the farmlands of Illionis and small town Arkansas. During that time, I saw the harsh realities of food production in America.
In Illinois, my classmates and I had to plug our noses to guard against the toxic smell wafting towards us from a nearby pig farm. In Arkansas, we lived 15 minutes away from a Tyson chicken factory where runoff from the factory sat in huge silos. Ironically, these rural towns where I got to school by walking through fields were the towns where neighbors struggled the most with unstable access to nutritious and responsibly grown food.
These towns were also where I first learned about the food system as a whole, and the enormous harm inflicted on people and animals by our current agricultural system. Witnessing this, I adopted a plant-based diet, which meant that a lot of the staples I grew up eating with my family were no longer an option.
Fast forward a couple of years after I graduated college, I started working in food tech. I was interested in the field for its vast potential to positively impact the climate by shifting our food systems. I wanted to start a business 'vegan-izing' the Asian snacks and foods I grew up eating for years.
Annie's T Cakes seeks to reduce the use of animal products in society while continuing to enjoy long-beloved foods. Heavily reducing the use of animal products would greatly reduce our negative impact on the environment and take care of all living things on our planet.

Business Description
Annie’s T Cakes is an Asian American, woman-owned business making vegan Asian snacks and desserts in Oakland, CA. My goal is to provide an environmentally and animal friendly alternative to traditional Asian snacks and desserts.
Asian snacks and desserts typically one or more animal products--milk, eggs, butter, and meat. I want to create vegan alternatives to these desserts to provide Asian American vegans like me a taste of home.
Our current products include Taiwanese pineapple cakes, mooncakes of various flavors, almond cookies, and tangyuan (glutionous rice ball with sweet fillings). Since starting this business in January 2021, Annie’s T Cakes has partnered with organizations of all sizes, recently making custom almond cookies for A24 Films premier of Everything Everywhere All At Once. All products are handmade and sold online, at pop ups, and at farmers markets in Oakland with a mission to create a more culturally diverse and ecologically sound food space.
While I got my start with traditional dessert items, my goal from the start of this business has always been to create plant-based versions of a wide range of traditional foods. In the future, I aim to grow Annie's T Cakes to include multiple lines of desserts, savory snacks, and ready-to-eat / quick prep foods including a line of vegan dim sum.
What is the purpose of this loan?
With all of this success, it's time to grow! Currently, all the products I make are handmade and labor intensive. These past two years, I've also worked on my own without any help prepping. This has meant many weeks where I find myself in the kitchen 16 hours a day, everyday without breaks. During busy seasons like the Mid Autumn Festival, I've made and packed over a thousand mooncakes at once.
I will use this loan to purchase a machine that can help 100x my production speeds, marketing services, and inventory. The machine makes filled dough balls with each of the fillings from my pineapple cakes, mooncakes, and tangyuan. Currently, this portion of the production process requires preportioning dough and filling separately then wrapping each filling inside of a dough ball. Without the machine, I can make one to two mooncakes a minute. The machine can make 20 mooncakes in one minute.
With expanded production, I can fill large orders with ease. I can also use the time outside of the kitchen to find accounts and rapidly expand my business.

What is the disbursed date?

We allow pre-disbursal because it ensures that the funds reach the borrower as soon as they are needed. What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.
Do Kiva borrowers pay any interest on their loans?
Our partners collect interest from borrowers because there are many operational expenses associated with microfinance in developing markets, especially in rural areas. Many of Kiva's Lending Partners also provide additional services alongside their loan products such as business training, financial literacy lessons, or health services.
Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Lending Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, we only partner with microfinance institutions and organizations that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked, and underserved.
