A loan helped a member to buy snack foods and drinks.

Mujeres Valientes Group's story

Small convenience stores are ubiquitous in the Highlands of Guatemala. Twenty-nine-year-old Ericka, mother of two children who are 7 and 10 years old, has one. She rents the space that is located by the side of a well-traveled road in the department/state of Suchitepequez.

Her husband is a day laborer and part of their combined income will be earmarked toward the purchase of constructing their future home.

Ericka has a ninth grade education and requests her first Kiva loan to buy a large quantity of snack foods and drinks at the wholesale level for her own store and to restock other stores.

Six women elected Ericka to be the Secretary of their Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Mujeres Valientes” or “Brave Women,” located in the department/state of Suchitepequez. These women have animal husbandry businesses, tortilla shops, or sell chicken or prepared foods. They appreciate their monthly educational training, part of the “Microcredit Plus” program. Topics are relevant to their lives and include an aspect of four subjects: business, health, family matters, women’s issues. They are designed by a facilitator who uses pictures, diagrams, role playing and games to share the information.

The ladies are eager to learn and often share with family members and friends.

Ericka and her friends send their gratitude to Kiva lenders from all parts of the world who learn about their goals and fund their loans. Thank you!
