A loan helped purchase equipment to grow a BIPOC vegan soul food catering business in Burlington.

Tishawn's story

I grew up in Brooklyn and from a young age was surrounded by delicious food from my mother's southern heritage and my father's Jamaican-Panamanian background. By age nine I was already capable of cooking for my entire family and continued cooking for my own children and community. As an adult I became Rastafari and took the Nazarite vow to live naturally, including becoming vegan. As a vegan I have experienced how challenging it is to go out to restaurants, often salads or plain potatoes are the only vegan option. This experience inspired me to create Empress Levi Soul Food with the goal of making delicious vegan meals that everyone, vegans and non-vegans, can enjoy. My goal through my food is to hopefully share how we can eat better. While I love to cook and see my customers try new foods, what I love even more is the way food brings joy and connection. By vending in markets and doing pop-up events I have had the pleasure of bringing the community together around delicious, natural food.
