A loan helped a community-focused and diversified farm in upstate NY provide farm worker housing.

Tim's story

I'm the owner and manager of Featherbed Lane Farm. I'm not from a farm family but I've loved farming since the first time I tried it back in 2006 as an apprentice. After years of gaining experience as a farmer and later a farm manager, it took me another 10 years to get to where I am now - with 5 years of trying to find and get access to land and another 5 years of developing the farm, conserving the land and securing a farm ownership loan in 2020. My farm provides year round produce, eggs and other local farm products to our community. I live on the farm with my wife and two children, both of whom were born in the farmhouse. I started this farm because I believe farming can provide nutritious foods while also sustaining a healthy environment and building community. I'm motivated by the challenge of operating a successful farm business that simultaneously feeds people, stewards the land, and respects farmers. In 2023, I am working with one of our farmers and a local business to design and build a cabin to be used by that farmer for farm worker housing. This will help me to continue operating the farm, as farmer housing is often difficult to secure. It also will provide a beautiful, on-farm home for the farmer, one which they helped design. With a lot of hard work, I've seen farm go from start-up to sustaining. I hope to see it continue on this trend, yielding abundance, habitat and home, community and so much more. Looking far ahead to a day when I'm no longer here, I hope I leave something to the next generation that is even more vibrant and full of opportunity than when I started.

This loan is special because:
