A loan helped a member to open another branch of her business, add an employee and buy more cell phone accessories.

Florecitas De Patzun Group's story

Brenda, a 26 year old mother of a 7 year old son who is in the 1st grade, is married to a bricklayer. She has an 8th grade education and was unable to move on to the 9th grade because her parents could not afford to send all of their 10 children through high school. Ten years ago, she began her business selling fruit and ceviche (marinated fish cocktail). But unfortunately, the business failed and she opened a business selling accessories for cell phones and second hand appliances. She rents a space. Now, Brenda wants to open another branch of her business and add an employee. She is requesting her 7th KIVA loan to buy more cell phone accessories for the new locale. Her goals are to have a prosperous business and increase income.

As President of the Friendship Bridge Trust Bank “Florecitas de Patzun”, Brenda calls the monthly meetings to order. There are 8 Maya Kaqchikel ladies in the group who live in the department/state of Chimaltenango. These women embroider traditional blouses/”huipiles”, farm broccoli and peas, sell vitamins, accessories for cell phones and second- hand appliances. They feel fortunate to participate in the Friendship Bridge “Microcredit Plus” program of loans, monthly educational training (business, health, family matters, women’s issues) and bi-monthly health care services (consults, exams, family planning).

It would be impossible for Brenda and her friends to walk into a bank to secure a loan. Thank you, KIVA investors, for lending a helping hand!
