A loan helped a Battle Creek area woman buy inventory and take over operation of local bakery.

Erin's story

Over the last 10+ year I have been building and operating a business called the Bakewell Company that specializes in frozen quiche made from local farm products. But my career in baking began back in 2001 as a college student when I was hired to ice cakes at my hometown bakery in Battle Creek, MI.

Over the years I have expanded my pastry and culinary skills, first at that hometown bakery, then at culinary school, then with an apprenticeship in Scotland, followed by years working at various restaurants and bakeries and finally, starting a business based around my own quiche recipe.

Right from the beginning the woman who owns the bakery I first worked at has been my career and business mentor. She helped my quiche business expand into our first commercial kitchen. Now she is ready to retire and I am planning to take over the bakery business from her and merge it with my existing specialty quiche line.

I am excited to begin operating a business that has had a special place not only in my own life but also in our community since 1977. I am also excited to be bringing together the two businesses that will strengthen each other by adding diversity to our product line and additional sales channels.

A loan through Kiva will help me purchase the inventory of the bakery and enable me to finish that sale and begin operating the business!

This loan is special because:

It supports a small business owner with 0%-interest, zero-fee capital.
