Over the last 10+ year I have been building and operating a business called the Bakewell Company that specializes in frozen quiche made from local farm products. But my career in baking began back in 2001 as a college student when I was hired to ice cakes at my hometown bakery in Battle Creek, MI.
Over the years I have expanded my pastry and culinary skills, first at that hometown bakery, then at culinary school, then with an apprenticeship in Scotland, followed by years working at various restaurants and bakeries and finally, starting a business based around my own quiche recipe.
Right from the beginning the woman who owns the bakery I first worked at has been my career and business mentor. She helped my quiche business expand into our first commercial kitchen. Now she is ready to retire and I am planning to take over the bakery business from her and merge it with my existing specialty quiche line.

The Bakewell Company specializes in hand-made quiche. Our products are fully cooked and frozen and sold by small retailers throughout southern Michigan. In 2009 our founder, Erin, started making quiche using pasture-raised eggs and pork from her parents' farms and selling at local farmers market. Enthusiastic customer response lead to the quiche becoming a business of their own. Today our kitchen staff make a variety of delicious and popular quiche flavors in our commercial kitchen facility in Portage, MI. We still use locally raised eggs, meats, veggies, and dairy products and craft each quiche with care. What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
When lending internationally, the local currency in a borrower's country may lose some of its value compared to the US dollar -- requiring the partner to use more of its local currency to repay Kiva in USD. We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
