Before I started my business, I was an educator and involved in the environmental field for years. I worked in sustainability and environmental education - teaching young people about where things like their food and goods they use daily come from, how they impact their health and that of the earth. My passion for the environment began late in college, when Jane Goodall came to speak at my university. I hung on her every word as she shared about what a deep impact one individual can have - the ripple effect we all cause with every choice we make. I began to live my life by her famous quote, "Every individual matters. Every individual has a role to play. Every individual makes a difference." I realized this was true; that we all really do matter and make a difference. This realization was both empowering and scary. I realized the responsibility I had to do my part - no matter how seemingly small and insignificant. I spent time working on organic farms, teaching gardening/food education to youth, got my Masters in Environmental Education, and taught at an environmental school for a while. Now with a products-based business, I weave this passion for sustainability in with everything we do & create. I am aware that we're creating and putting out new things into the world, so we are incredibly conscious in how we source ingredients, packaging, and what we do with things once they no longer serve us.

Business Description
I started Good Flower Farm in 2014 with a pound or so of coconut oil, shea butter, & beeswax: launching our best-selling organic lip balms via our small Etsy shop. I had become increasingly interested in sustainable living over the previous decade, and wanted to do my part in sourcing & creating the healthiest body care products I could. I worked full-time in sustainability/environmental education for high schoolers while slowly growing the brand. Over the years, we have grown to a full line of organic skincare products - from facial creams & serums to deodorants to herbal salves to a baby line in honor of my daughter born in 2021. We went from selling on Etsy to selling at many farmers markets & events in our previous home of Nashville, to selling exclusively wholesale and online, to now having our own retail shop in our new home of Bayfield, Wisconsin. Our line of products is now carried in nearly 200 stores across the country, including Anthropologie, sold online via our website, and in our retail shop. Two previous Kiva loans helped us rebrand (2020) and build out a more functional & spacious production space (2021).
What is the purpose of this loan?
We have paid back both Kiva loans, and are now seeking $25,000 to expand our retail space. We opened our first retail location in 2022 in our town of Bayfield, Wisconsin. It's a tiny space in front of our production studio for our skincare products, and while it is lovely and has fostered so many rich connections with our local community, we are inhibited by its size. We are planning to expand our retail offerings to include more than just our line of products. We will offer a full bulk refill station with cleaning products & soap for the community. We will sell zero waste, sustainable products for body, hygiene, babies, pets, and more. We'll also have supplements, teas, some healthy snacks & beverages, bulk spices & herbs, and other staples for a healthy, eco-friendly lifestyle. This loan will help us fulfill our dream of bringing more consciously-sourced good-for-us-good-for-the-earth offerings to our town that currently has to travel 30 minutes+ for things like this. It will also allow us to employ more in our community and fill in the gaps of a small tourist town where many things are not available to year-round residents 1/2 the year. We're so excited to share more about this project and where our expanded home will be located :)

What is the disbursed date?

We allow pre-disbursal because it ensures that the funds reach the borrower as soon as they are needed. Loan funds from Kiva lenders then go to backfill that amount and as a lender you assume the risk of the loan. By doing this, our Lending Partners assume the risk that, if the loan isn't funded by lenders, they will have to fund the loan without any funds from Kiva.
If a partner loan is not pre-disbursed, it will be listed on Kiva with an expected "post-disbursed" date. If a post-disbursed loan is not funded on Kiva, there is a chance that the borrower may not receive their loan. What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.
Do Kiva borrowers pay any interest on their loans?
Our partners collect interest from borrowers because there are many operational expenses associated with microfinance in developing markets, especially in rural areas. Many of Kiva's Lending Partners also provide additional services alongside their loan products such as business training, financial literacy lessons, or health services.
Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Lending Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, we only partner with microfinance institutions and organizations that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked, and underserved.

A 0.5-star rating means the organization has a relatively higher risk of institutional default, while a 5-star rating indicates the organization is at a relatively lower risk of default, based on Kiva's analysis and the available information displayed in the Lending Partner section of every loan. Lending Partners with the lowest credit tier undergo a lighter level of due diligence and do not receive a risk rating; instead, in places where a risk rating would normally appear, these partners are labeled as “Experimental.” For more information, see "What is an Experimental Lending Partner?"
Direct loans also do not receive a formal risk rating. Instead, these loans are approved through “social underwriting”, where trustworthiness is determined by friends & family lending a portion of the loan request, or by a Kiva approved Trustee vouching for the borrower. Kiva loans are facilitated through 2 models, partner and direct, that enable us to reach the greatest number of people around the world.
For partner loans, borrowers apply to a local Lending Partner, which manages the loan on the ground. Lending Partners are responsible for screening borrowers, disbursing loans, posting borrowers to the Kiva website for funding, collecting repayments and otherwise administering Kiva loans on the ground to borrowers.
For direct loans, borrowers apply through the Kiva website and may or may not be endorsed by a Trustee. Unlike Lending Partners, Trustees don't handle any financial transactions or have any duty to repay loans on behalf of their borrowers. Instead, Trustees take the role of providing support and business advice to their borrowers throughout the term of the loan.
