Matea, 50 years old, has been a widow for four years and the mother of seven children (+17 years). She only had a three-year education because her father was an alcoholic, and that's why he passed away. However, Matea encouraged her children to attend school. Five of her children are now adults, and the two little ones are in primary school. Currently, five of her children are married, and she is the grandmother of nine children. She began selling semi-new traditional clothing from her home as well as door to door 20 years ago.For her first Kiva loan, Matea is requesting to purchase new styles of blouses, "huipiles," wrap skirts, "cortes," and belts, "fajas." She wants her business to grow and provide more income for her family.
Matea and seven other Kaqchikel Mayan women, from the "Las Mariposas" Puente de Amistad Community Bank located in the department of Chimaltenango, The group meets monthly to make their loan payments, and then, with a facilitator, they participate in important educational meetings that present business management skills, good health practices, or self-empowerment. Business skills in budgeting, saving, and investing are critical to the success of their businesses, which include selling traditional clothing and farming. To help the ladies understand the principles, the facilitator employs games, role plays, photos, and diagrams.
