A loan helped a woman-owned farm build a permanent home for rabbits, flowers, goats, and agricultural education.

Charissa's story

I come from a background of farmers, although it skipped my parents' generation and found a home in me! I feel incredibly lucky to have discovered two callings: farming and teaching. I have a background in education and worked in preschools and museums in New York City for six years before moving to Western Pennsylvania. I started to develop a love for plants and gardening while working at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. I never thought of myself as someone with a green thumb until I learned the language of plants from actual horticulturalists.

After moving to Pennsylvania, I started working on farms and developed an interest in learning how to care for and manage livestock in addition to growing vegetables on a larger scale. It was very eye opening to get such helpful and informative experiences before striking out on my own. Two years ago, I started my own farm business with 6 does (female rabbits) and 1 buck (male rabbit) and I also started growing flowers with a friend last summer and we had a blast selling bouquets at a local farmer's market in Pittsburgh.
