A loan helped to purchase more store goods.

Merinda's story

Merinda is from a small inland village in Sandaun Province.
She travels by boat down the river and catches a public transport to the Indonesia PNG border to purchase her store goods. The main reason why she travels that distance is because all food items sold are cheap at the border.

She is a strong woman to travel to the border despite the weather and distance she covers, which takes her about 2 days. Her main business activity is selling store goods like rice, sugar, oil, salt, detergents, flour bags, yeast and clothes. Her estimated costs are around K1,000 and she is comfortable because she knows her profits.

She is one of the few women who are engaged in this type of informal market and Merinda has been wise to save her money in the bank which has qualified her to acquire this loan. She also noted that small stock is sold out in a week and to travel again costs her a lot weekly.

Merinda is 38 years old with 2 children who are young and in lower primary school. From this market, she takes care of her children's basic school needs and their daily family needs.

From this loan, she will purchase store goods to increase her current stock. She will invest some money in the bank for her children with her new profits from these sales.

This loan is special because:

It promotes financial independence for marginalized women entrepreneurs.
