I got inspired to pursue my own business when I was working hard for another cleaning company and the boss would always say that one day I could have my own company. His praise nourished a dream to have my own business that had started 20 years before, but I never had the confidence to pursue it.
With his encouragement, I started doing my research on which way I wanted to go: franchise or independent. Independent was the route I chose. I knew being an independent operator would be more challenging, but I wanted to be able to learn all aspects of the business and put that knowledge to use as I grow the business. Then, in July 2019, I got my first large job - I became the primary cleaner of a large residential complex. I have a team of 10 that helps me clean sites around the region. We have 10 recurring contracts and we also take on a lot of one-time project work, including post-construction cleaning.
What is the purpose of this loan?
A Kiva loan will help me to purchase specialized equipment, including a water-fed pole system and a strip & buff floor machine. Currently, we hire subcontractors for work that we do not have the equipment to complete. What does "Partner covers currency loss" mean & how could it affect my Kiva loans?
When lending internationally, the local currency in a borrower's country may lose some of its value compared to the US dollar -- requiring the partner to use more of its local currency to repay Kiva in USD. We offer some Lending Partners the option to protect themselves against currency fluctuations by choosing to pass on these losses to Kiva lenders. By bearing this risk, lenders protect the partner and its borrowers from catastrophic currency devaluations and contribute to the sustainability of their operations.
Potential for currency exchange loss is noted on every loan profile under the loan details:
"Yes" means the Lending Partner will cover any currency loss. Lenders will not bear losses due to currency fluctuation
"Partial" means that the Lending Partner has opted to cover losses only up to 10%. If the U.S. dollar appreciates more than 10% against the local currency, those losses will be passed onto lenders.
"No" means that the Lending Partner is not covering any currency losses and all losses will be passed onto lenders.
"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.
