I am the proud father of two boys, ages 7 and 17. My Wife and I both suffered from chronic pain for years (April with endometriosis and me with fibromyalgia). In addition to living with fibromyalgia, I contracted COVID-19 when the disease was new and fatal for so many. I was very sick, and despite overcoming Covid, I continued to suffer from subsequent health issues. I decided to live life to the fullest and started eating healthier. Taking care of my body was my top priority, which helped me to lose 100 pounds. I separated from my Baltimore City Public School teaching job altogether. I started working the business full time in addition to home schooling our youngest.
April worked in the financial field for over a decade in banking, fiscal and analytical positions. She sat on the African American sub-committee board, assisting non-profits with grants to help them grow their businesses. We are both college graduates. April is currently working on her second degree in business. She worked a full and part-time job in addition to her hours devoted to Harp Vision. Not only were we working overtime to make products and fuel our business success, but we were also doing it under the duress of constant physical aching. April resigned from both jobs allowing her to join me in working full-time on the business.
Being an entrepreneur is vital because we can create a work-life balance. Although it's hard work, it's far more fulfilling because it's not just another job but a passion project that's changing lives in our community. Working for ourselves allows us to make our schedules and spend quality time with our children while managing our symptoms properly. Business Description
Initially, we started using natural products we created to ease our pain using minerals and plant-based ingredients. Eventually, the people around us, friends, family, and community started showing interest in buying our herbal bath tea, gourmet body scrub, aromatherapy candles, and mineral/herb-infused soap. We knew it would be beneficial to evolve what we were already making into a business. Our business allows us to make a social impact by hiring within our community and helping ease our customer's pain/skin ailments.
We branched out, selling at area farmers' markets, dispensaries and pop-ups, trying to reach as many consumers as possible. Running a business, being a parent, and working around the clock has their challenges and limitations. After months of strategizing, we were able to secure a space at the world-famous Lexington market. This location allowed us to have a consistent place instead of meeting customers at various markets and pop-ups.
Today, pharmaceutical companies fuel the healthcare industry. We are deeply passionate about bringing back the roots of the remedies our grandmothers and grandfathers used that actually worked and alleviated ailments naturally.
What is the purpose of this loan?
Lexington Market is a staple food hub in Baltimore City and after its newest redevelopment, we were invited to open up a kiosk space to bring our products to more people so we will use this loan to help us cover the rent costs for the new market. In order to support our new location and expansion, we aim to hire new talent, which will help ramp up productivity without straining our current team. We've doubled our customer base in the last several months, so we'll need a larger workforce to keep pace. We will provide jobs for unemployed and underemployed residents of Baltimore city who are seeking to hire part-time and full-time employees. While compensation is the most obvious cost associated with hiring new talent, other expenses include advertising job openings, performing background screenings, and training.
We would also like to fund a marketing campaign for advertising, PR, social media marketing, and search engine optimization. This loan would also assist us with vendor event fees for the year, which includes farmers' markets and special events. This loan will allow us to purchase additional supplies (inventory) and equipment. The equipment needed will allow us to match the current demand, fulfill more extensive orders, increase our partnerships, and expand our reach in new markets.

"N/A" means the Lending Partner disburses loans to borrowers in USD so their loans are not subject to any currency fluctuation.

Our partners collect interest from borrowers because there are many operational expenses associated with microfinance in developing markets, especially in rural areas. Many of Kiva's Lending Partners also provide additional services alongside their loan products such as business training, financial literacy lessons, or health services.
Kiva will not partner with an organization that charges unreasonable interest rates, and we require Lending Partners to fully disclose their rates. In addition, we only partner with microfinance institutions and organizations that have a social mission to serve the poor, unbanked, and underserved.
