A loan helped to buy a biodigester to cook with biogas and to help the environment.

Joseph's story

Joseph plans to use a Sistema Biobolsa biodigester to eliminate wood, fossil fuels, and chemical fertilizers from his farm. He lives in Murang'a with five family members, including parents. He supports his family with income from his five cows and from his annual vegetable yield.

Joseph wastes time chopping wood to burn for cooking and heating bathwater. He also worries about the air quality for his family. With the biodigester, he will transform his cow's manure into renewable energy (biogas) and organic fertilizer. As he starts putting the animal waste into the biodigester, bacteria will convert it into both biogas for cooking and nutrient-rich fertilizer that Joseph will apply on his vegetable field. All of this will enable him to increase his yield, eliminate the need to chop wood, and use the money he used to spend on fossil fuels and chemical fertilizer to invest in buying additional cows.

With this Kiva loan, Joseph will realize his dream of making his farm economically and environmentally sustainable in order to continue the generational tradition of farming in Murang'a. This loan represents 100% of the price of the biodigester.

This loan is special because:

It saves farmers money by transforming waste into biogas and organic fertilizer.
