A loan helped a member to purchase ingredients for her recipes.

Fe Y Vida Group's story

Virgilia, 58 years old, has been a widow for 12 years and is the mother of 6 children over the age of 18. Six of her children received primary/secondary school education and are married. Virgilia is the grandmother of 9 children. Her youngest daughter is her life partner because she has special abilities.

For 18 years, she has made chocolate and a flour from a fruit called ujuxte to make atol [a corn-based beverage]. Virgilia also sells food and fruit. With her third Kiva loan, she will be able to purchase ingredients for her food recipes.

As president of the Friendship Bridge communal bank Fe Y Vida, Virgilia calls the monthly meetings to order. There are 7 women in the group who live in the department/state of Chimaltenango. The women sell chocolate, pinol (a beverage of ujuxte toasted with cacao, cinnamon and vanilla), and sell fruit and food.

A Friendship Bridge facilitator also attends and shares practical interactive lessons with the goal of empowering the women. The women learn about health, hygiene, nutrition, the use of medicinal plants, and get business management tools. These training meetings are a real plus in the Microcrédito Plus program.
