A loan helped a small woman-owned woodland farm in Hurdle Mills, NC bring much needed grid-tie electric to the farm.

Katie And Jaime's story

My name is Katie, and I am a first-generation farmer who has been farming vegetables, flowers, and herbs for the past decade. I founded a successful cut-flower operation in Rougemont called Orlaya Flora (2017 – 2022). Orlaya sold predominantly flowers to wholesale accounts including local florists, Durham Co-op, and Piedmont Wholesale Flowers, and ran a 50-member weekly CSA. I was also the manager of Piedmont Wholesale Flowers Cooperative in 2018, working with Orange & Durham County flower farmers. I graduated with a B.S. in Sustainable Development from Appalachian State University.

Jaime Fennelly is a systems designer, problem solver, and sustainable builder with experience in marine, residential and off-grid projects. He has experience in regenerative forestry, which he first became knowledgeable of while working in the late 2000s on several Nature Conservancy projects, and has been excited to apply those skills to Riparia Gardens. Previous to relocating to NC, Jaime grew culinary mushrooms, flowers, vegetables, native perennials and planted a small fruit orchard on his 1/4 acre garden in Maine. Jaime is an accomplished artist/musician who has presented internationally and received funding from the National Performance Network, the Driehaus Foundation, the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs, and Meet the Composer. Jaime received an MFA from Bard College.
