Vida's story

My background is tied to my business because it taught me that hard work and perseverance make anything possible. Additionally, my business consists of African clothing and hair products, which was a big part of my life growing up. My name is Vida Mensah. I come from Ghana, West Africa; I live in Hartford, CT. I am the fourth-born of seven children and the first to attend college. I immigrated to the US when I was 24 years old. It was hard for me because of the language barrier, so I took multiple ESL classes. My first-spoken language is Twi, which was not spoken much in the US then. This setback made it hard for me to get a job. After many long classes, I managed to go to Capital Community College, located in Hartford, CT.

Life became very sour when I became pregnant during my college journey. I had to put a hold on school and take care of my baby. After the baby matured, I went back to school. Shortly after, I had to quit due to financial issues. I lost my job, I couldn’t pay my rent, and my daughter and I became homeless. I became a single mother, was homeless twice and had a very low-paying occupation.

I finally got a new job and home. After the pandemic, I started selling some hair products and African clothing. I saved up some money, registered my business, and rented a physical store. My motivation for my business is the fear of becoming homeless with my daughter again, so I have to strive to keep going.
