A loan helped a Latina owned business get necessary equipment to provide business startup services to rural areas.

Carolin's story

I was born in St Thomas Virgin Islands to an immigrant Dominican mother and father. At the age of 6, we moved to NYC, and that’s where my life changed. In the year 2002, my father was tragically killed due to gun violence in the city; I was only 8. I and my brothers and mother learned to survive life without my father. Life was really hard for us in this new city, and with a mother who didn’t speak English, it felt like we were so foreign. Years of hardship followed my family, we were living in a two-bedroom apartment, so I never knew what it was like to have my own room. Money was very tight growing up, so we had to be very understanding about not getting things we wanted but getting things that we needed.

I am the youngest of three and have always dreamed big since childhood. I knew that I wanted to be successful by any means and provide a better life for my Single mother and two brothers. At the age of 20, I gave birth to my son. He is such a blessing, but shortly I became a single mother by choice because the person had my son with was verbally abusive towards me. My son has motivated me to do better for both of us, so I did every job possible to ensure I could provide a comfortable environment. Being a dreamer, I went for my dream and started a business because my goal in life is to be financially stable and accessible so that I can spend all my time with my son. In today's day, I am grateful for everything.
