A loan helped to expand safe drinking water access in Tanzania by reducing production costs by 30%.

Jibu Tanzania's story

Jibu Tanzania provides affordable, safe drinking water solutions to Tanzanians living on $2 to $10 per day in urban communities where people typically drink untreated or boiled water. By offering refillable clean drinking water, Jibu reduces household costs, respiratory illness, and carbon emissions caused by boiling water over wood and charcoal.

Jibu Tanzania also tackles high unemployment rates and a lack of meaningful business opportunities by offering local entrepreneurs a turnkey business opportunity via a franchise model that promotes local entrepreneurship and enables the creation of hundreds of jobs, reduces plastic waste, and instills a recycling and reuse culture by selling refilled water only.

Since 2017, Jibu Tanzania has sold more than 20,000,000 liters of safe drinking water in Tanzania via its network of 21 franchisees, impacting the lives of hundreds of thousands of Tanzanians. This Kiva loan will enable Jibu Tanzania to secure the equipment and materials necessary to produce its own refillable plastic water bottles, reducing production costs for franchisees by 30% and allowing them to expand into more regions of Tanzania.
