A loan helped woman-owned business focusing on sustainability & community, plus buy equipment for expansion.

Kate's story

My mission as an artist is to use art to foster deep connections among us. That is how my Placemaking in Art specialty coffee shop transformed a neighborhood and became a full-fledged and sustainable business. Activating spaces makes communities safer, cuts crime, and builds connections. Since opening in a small, boarded-up neighborhood business district in 2019 and transforming the block, three new small women-owned businesses have been able to open on my block late last year, crime is down, and the community is more connected than ever. And I've grown my professional and personal skills, learning to manage staff and build careers.

As a thought leader in art, I've transferred those skills to innovative thinking in the cafe, becoming one of the inaugural 100 US businesses to be living wage certified, becoming Oceanic Global Blue Action certified - having diverted over 34,000 lbs from landfill to healthy soil and contributing to a circular economy with a quality of life mission in Specialty Coffee. I love this work's challenge and community contribution and am ready to grow my business and expand.
