Howanda's story

Hi, I'm Howanda, a mother of three children. Monteara who’s my oldest, Keara, and my son Kenyotta Jr. My reasons. I was born in Chicago Illinois in the Englewood area, where I was raised by my Grandma. She was already raising the boys, my first cousins and then we came along. We moved with my Grandma in hopes that we would be better protected because of what happened to my sister. The house where most of my childhood memories are is where I slept in a bedroom my whole childhood without a door and it wasn’t safe for us girls (Think about being in the woods in a cabin with no doors). That’s just my perspective from my inner child. A lot of life happened In Chicago where I was born and raised however here is where my life had another translation. I attended Harper High which my favorite first cousin and I attended together.

In his Senior year, he was killed on the corner of our block where we lived after receiving a scholarship for basketball. He actually was killed two days after his eighteenth birthday. That took a toll on the whole family. The school wasn’t encouraged. I felt unfulfilled and decided that I would go to Job Corps. While I was in Job corps they moved to Memphis Tennessee. I’ve been on my own ever since. Being raped at the age of 16 and 1/2 shortly before I left for Job Corps hit hard for me as well. I didn’t have anyone to tell. So I carried that right along with me. I graduated after a year when I received my GED and landscaping trade. I realized then I had no place to call home.
