A loan helped our company grow with more and better resources.

Maria-Ines's story

JC Jewels founder, Josefina Cortes, started the company in 2006 in Nogales, AZ. Josefina came to the United States and could not work because she had four children and had to work at home to care for them. She started by selling cakes and saved money to start her jewelry company. Little by little, the company grew more and more by selling to locals and spreading the word. As locals trusted the company and became recurring customers, they started inviting her to Bazaar and selling at local coffee shops weekly. My sister and I always accompanied her to events and became business people. From these events, I began helping more with the company. I started our Instagram in 2018 and learned social media marketing. My sister owns her own candle business and recently got a Kiva loan.

We continued like that for years and once quarantine struck, the business was affected greatly since we lost sales and owed money. We thought of stopping business completely. However, it occurred to us to do Instagram story sales and deliver jewelry daily to our locals in their mailboxes. Our business flourished from this. We became more well-known as a more professional business and our clientele grew. I, Maria-Ines, then moved to Tucson, AZ for school and brought the jewelry with me to continue selling at farmer’s markets, street fairs, and local events in Tucson, Phoenix, and Nogales, AZ. This has helped me because we became partners and it has helped me learn money management, self-sustainability, and organization. We are proud of our Latina, Women, Mother-Daughter Owned Company. My mother has always taught me to be independent, and responsible, and always have a grown mindset. We are JC Jewels and invite you to be part of our journey.
