A loan helped increase incomes for more than 850 spice farmers in India.

Diaspora Co.'s story

The commodity spice trade severely undercompensates farmers and produces low quality final products. Farmers typically only receive about 2% of the final price of the product. Meanwhile, traders, auction houses, and importers / exporters capture most of the value.

Diaspora Co. is a woman-founded social enterprise that works directly with smallholder partners in India and Sri Lanka that operate sustainable farms. Diaspora aims to shorten (and make transparent) the supply chain and reward quality. Diaspora has set premium wages with its farm partners (an average of 4x higher than commodity prices and 3x Fairtrade prices) that ensure smallholder partners and their workers are adequately compensated for their labor. The average income per farm worker is about Rs.350/day, while laborers at Diaspora Co partner farms earn Rs.500-600/day.

Diaspora has worked with over 850 rural, low-income farmers, many from tribal, secluded caste, and Nomadic communities.

Kiva’s loan will enable Diaspora Co. to buy more produce from partner farmers and bring on more farmers. This is Diaspora Co.’s first loan through the Kiva Social Enterprise program.

This loan is special because:

It supports a woman-led enterprise that increases farmer incomes in India.
